Bedrock recovery FAQ: what to try after something breaks
Backup habits, world restore, post-update behaviour, Realm slot recovery, and when to escalate to Minecraft Support. Every answer links to the Mojang Help Center, Xbox status page, or the specific official article that owns the fix. Reviewed 28 August 2026 — this site does not verify every step, so the linked official article always wins.
World backup habits
Back up before every game drop, before enabling experimental features, before applying a new Behavior or Resource Pack, and before reinstalling. Export a
.mcworld where the device provides that control. Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch do not generally expose direct .mcworld export; use a Realm upload/download as the supported cross-device route when available. Reference: Minecraft Help Center. On Windows, open Play > Worlds, select the pencil (Edit) on the target world, choose Export World, and save the
.mcworld file to a location you control. File import/export availability differs by platform; this does not mean a console exposes the same file controls. Reference: Minecraft Help Center. The world lives on Mojang's Realm servers. Open Realm settings and choose Download World before changing the Realm. Mojang currently provides an 18-month period to download worlds after a subscription expires, but that window is finite; keep a verified local copy for long-term recovery. Reference: Mojang, Realms.
Not through a direct
.mcworld export in normal use. Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch do not generally expose the Windows-style Export World file flow. The supported cross-device route is to upload the console world to a Realm, then download it on the destination device. This requires Realm access, a compatible world, available storage, and successful upload/download; it is not a general console file-export feature. Reference: Mojang, Realms.Restore & corruption
On a platform that exposes file import, open Play > Import, pick the
.mcworld, and Bedrock adds it as another world entry. On Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch, use a Realm transfer instead of assuming file import exists. Do not delete the original until the restored or Realm-downloaded copy loads cleanly. Reference: Minecraft Help Center.Download a local backup of the current Realm slot through Realm settings, then close and reopen the game. If the Realm still fails, wait 15 minutes in case a build is still rolling out, then check help.minecraft.net for a known-issue post before uploading the local copy back to the slot. Do not delete the Realm — that is not reversible. Reference: Minecraft Help Center.
Usually not corruption — it may be a chunk that failed to save, including when storage ran out or the app closed during a save. Free device storage and quit through the pause menu. Keep a
.mcworld copy where export is supported; for console worlds, use a verified Realm transfer when available rather than assuming direct file export. Reference: Minecraft Help Center.No. Bedrock and Java use different world formats and multiplayer networks. Between Bedrock devices, use
.mcworld import/export only where both devices expose it; Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch generally require a Realm upload/download for supported cross-device transfer. Third-party converters are not officially supported and can corrupt saves. Reference: Mojang, Java or Bedrock Edition.Game-drop & update behaviour
Yes. Mojang states that on Bedrock you can only play the latest stable version or a preview/beta build. Older stable versions cannot be launched. Everyone in a group also needs the same version to play together, so a slower console can be temporarily unreachable until it updates. Reference: Mojang, Java or Bedrock Edition.
Open the game > Settings > About (or Support, depending on device). Write down the version number before troubleshooting anything multiplayer. Version mismatch is the single most common reason “we cannot join” happens after a game drop, and comparing numbers is faster than any network test. Reference: in-game Settings > About panel.
The creator may need to publish a compatibility update for the new build. Open the map's Marketplace entry, download any available update, and try again. Do not delete the world save; keep a
.mcworld export where supported, or a verified Realm copy for a console world, and check the creator's support page if listed. Reference: Mojang, Marketplace.No. Bedrock does not offer any officially supported way to keep an older stable version installed. If a workflow genuinely requires pinning a past version, Java is the edition that can launch any past release from its launcher — Bedrock cannot substitute for that. Reference: Mojang, Java or Bedrock Edition.
Sign-in & multiplayer errors
Confirm the system clock is correct (sign-in rejects large clock skews), then open the Xbox status page for a live incident. If both are clean, sign out and back in with the account that owns the game. If someone in the family group changed a privacy setting recently, that sign-out is required before the change applies. Reference: Xbox status page.
Confirm the account is signed into Xbox/Microsoft services (not just the game locally), that multiplayer is allowed in that account's privacy settings, and that the friend accepted on the same Microsoft account that plays. A child account with multiplayer disabled will show an empty list even after the invite arrives. Reference: Xbox family hub.
Version mismatch is the most common reason. Both players must be on the same Bedrock version. Compare Settings > About numbers on both devices before doing anything network-related. If both match, check whether the invited account has cross-play permitted in its privacy settings. Reference: Mojang, Java or Bedrock Edition.
Work through the official checks in order: same version on both devices, correct Microsoft account signed in, multiplayer allowed in privacy settings, Xbox status healthy, and connection stable. Only escalate to router or ISP changes after those four are clean. The Minecraft Help Center covers each check with platform-specific screenshots. Reference: Minecraft Help Center.
Realm slot recovery
Mojang currently says you have 18 months to download Realm worlds after the subscription expires. Open the Realm entry and download every world you need during that period. Renewing may restore active service, but this site cannot guarantee that an expired Realm will reappear indefinitely. If the download option is missing, contact Minecraft Support with the account, platform, and subscription details. Reference: Mojang, Realms.
Open Realm settings > Download World. The downloaded world plays locally on that device. Keep it separate from the live Realm so a reset or overwrite does not replace it. Mojang currently provides an 18-month download window after a subscription expires, but that window is finite; a verified local copy remains the safer long-term archive. Reference: Mojang, Realms.
Restore the most recent local .mcworld export you have. Mojang explicitly warns against relying on server-side history for restore, which is exactly why exporting a local copy before any destructive action is the standing recommendation. If no local backup exists, the reset is not reversible from Mojang's side. Reference: Minecraft Help Center.
Bedrock Dedicated Server (BDS) is free official software Mojang publishes for Windows and 64-bit Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later. Mojang states that other Linux distributions are not supported. BDS gives you more control, but you take on updates, backups, and networking. Consoles still cannot connect directly to a self-hosted server, so if console players need to join, Realms remains the practical option. Reference: Mojang, Bedrock Dedicated Server.
Marketplace pack failures
Open the world's Edit screen, go to Behavior Packs or Resource Packs, and remove the newest pack you added. If the world then loads, that pack is the cause; contact the pack's creator page through its Marketplace entry for a fix. Always export a .mcworld before toggling packs so a failed test does not corrupt the save. Reference: Mojang, Marketplace.
Marketplace purchases follow the Microsoft account signed into Minecraft, not the device. Reinstalling and signing back in with that same account re-downloads them from the library. Sony's parents guide notes that PlayStation uses Minecraft Tokens/wallet content that stays on PlayStation. Reference: Mojang, Marketplace FAQ.
Featured server data is fetched from Mojang each time the tab opens; a temporary outage or partial refresh can leave the list empty. Check the Xbox status page for a live incident, retry after a few minutes, and confirm the account has multiplayer enabled before assuming the game is broken. Do not reinstall over this alone. Reference: Xbox status page.
Reinstall as last resort
Only after backups are safe, Settings > About shows the current version, sign-in and privacy settings check out, and help.minecraft.net has no matching known-issue post. Reinstalling clears entitlement caches and rebuilds pack folders, but it does not fix account mismatch, family privacy blocks, or version-mismatch problems. Reference: Minecraft Help Center.
Local Bedrock worlds live in app storage under platform-specific rules. Before uninstalling, export to
.mcworld where the device supports it. Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch do not generally expose direct file export, so use a verified Realm transfer or the console platform's documented backup path. Never assume an uninstall preserves worlds. Reference: platform storage documentation.Export every world to .mcworld and copy the files off the machine. Uninstall Minecraft from Windows Settings > Apps. Run
wsreset.exe from the Start menu to refresh the Microsoft Store cache. Reinstall from the Xbox app or the Microsoft Store with the same Microsoft account that owns the game, then re-import the worlds. Reference: Microsoft, help with Store purchases.Escalating to Mojang Help
When the problem persists after version match, sign-in refresh, privacy check, and Xbox status confirms healthy. Attach the exact error text, the platform, the game version from Settings > About, and the Microsoft account email in the request. Do that at help.minecraft.net > Submit a request rather than emailing an unknown address. Reference: Minecraft Help Center, submit a request.
Platform (Windows edition, Xbox Series X, iPad model, etc.), game version from Settings > About, exact reproduction steps, expected result, actual result, and — for world-specific bugs — the world's approximate size and pack list. Bug reports without reproduction steps are hard to prioritise. Reference: Mojang bug tracker.
No. Community threads (Reddit, Minecraft Forum, Discord) are useful signals about how widespread a problem is, not authoritative fixes. Cross-reference any step against help.minecraft.net or an official Mojang status/article before applying it, especially anything that touches saves or account settings.
