Capabilities & failure modes

What Bedrock supports — and how each feature fails after an update

Every feature below is paired with the failure signature that shows up after a game drop and the first recovery check to run. This page is a route map, not a promise — the linked Mojang Help article always wins. Reviewed 28 August 2026.

Cross-play failures after an update

Cross-play breaks when one device updates faster than another, or when a family privacy setting changed while the game was closed. Symptoms and first checks:

Symptom: friend appears offline right after a drop

Bedrock only lets players on the same version join. A slower console can be temporarily unreachable until it updates. Compare Settings > About numbers on both devices before touching anything network-related.

Recovery: force an update through the platform store, wait for the download, restart the game, retry the invite.

Symptom: invite arrives but Join button greys out

Almost always an account privacy setting on the invited profile, especially child accounts. Xbox states only a parent in the family group can change the setting and the child must sign out and back in for the change to apply.

Recovery: adjust Xbox privacy & online safety in the family group, sign the affected account out and back in, retry.

Symptom: cross-play worked yesterday, empty friends list today

Confirm the account is signed into Xbox Live/Microsoft (not just the game locally). Check the Xbox status page for a live incident before assuming the game is broken.

Recovery: Xbox status page → re-sign-in → retry.

Realms slot recovery patterns

Realms fail visibly in three ways after a drop: the slot goes missing, the world hangs on load, or a Marketplace pack applied on the Realm refuses to open. Order of checks:

  1. Missing slot after payment lapse. Mojang currently provides an 18-month period to download worlds after a Realm subscription expires. Use that finite window promptly. Renewing may restore active service, but it does not guarantee that an expired Realm will reappear indefinitely; contact Minecraft Support if the expected download is unavailable.
  2. Realm hangs on load. Open Realm settings, choose Download World, close the game, wait 15 minutes in case a build fix is still rolling out, and check help.minecraft.net for a known-issue post before reuploading a local copy.
  3. Realm pack failure after a drop. Compare the packs installed on the world against the Marketplace entry — creators sometimes need to publish a compatibility update for the new build. Do not delete the world; disable the new pack and re-test.

Backup habit. Realm slots are hosted on Mojang servers, but server-side history is not a substitute for your own recoverable copy. Export a .mcworld where the device supports it. Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch do not generally provide direct .mcworld export, so use a Realm upload/download as the supported transfer route when available.

Marketplace pack failures after a drop

Creator packs live in the same version stream as the base game. When Bedrock advances, some packs need a compatibility update from their author. Symptoms and safe steps:

Symptom: world crashes on load after a pack update

Open the world's Edit screen, go to Behavior Packs or Resource Packs, remove the newest pack. If load succeeds, contact the pack's creator page from its Marketplace entry.

Recovery: export the world first, then toggle packs one at a time.

Symptom: purchased Marketplace item missing after reinstall

Marketplace purchases follow the Microsoft account signed into Minecraft, not the device. Reinstalling and signing back in with the same account re-downloads them from the library. PlayStation Tokens/wallet content stays on PlayStation.

Recovery: sign in with the purchasing Microsoft account, open the Marketplace library, re-download.

Symptom: Pass catalog item stopped playing

Pass catalog content is subscription access — items rotate out of the catalog. Mojang's Pass FAQ notes that Character Creator items you redeemed persist; worlds, textures, skins, and mash-ups generally need a Marketplace purchase after they leave the catalog.

Recovery: confirm the item is still on the catalog list on the official Pass page; if it rotated out, buy it separately or accept the loss.

Split-screen quirks after console updates

Local split-screen on the same TV is a console-only Bedrock feature. Console system updates and Bedrock game drops both change its behaviour; the usual symptoms are guest-profile lockouts or a Featured Servers menu that refuses to load in split-screen.

Symptom: second controller cannot join

Check that the second profile is signed into the console's profile system and has permission to sign into Xbox Live/Microsoft services. Split-screen still needs each profile signed in to save progress.

Symptom: Featured Servers greyed in split-screen

Mojang states split-screen sessions do not use Featured Servers. Return to single-profile mode to use that menu, or use a Realm or friend's open world instead.

Symptom: split-screen missing on Windows or mobile

Not a bug. Mojang states split-screen is available only on the console versions of Bedrock; Windows and mobile do not offer it.

Input quirks after OS updates

Controller and touch input often break after an OS update rather than after a Bedrock update. The fix is on the OS side, not inside Minecraft.

Symptom: Bluetooth controller drops on iOS after iOS update

Re-pair the controller in the iOS Bluetooth settings, then relaunch the game. Apple's controller support tables list supported models — verify yours is still listed.

Symptom: touch stops registering after an Android update

Clear the app cache in Android app settings, restart the device, and confirm no screen protector is interfering. If a specific model regresses across Android updates, escalate to the device maker.

Symptom: Windows loses controller mid-session

Check for controller firmware updates through Xbox Accessories or the vendor tool, then update Windows. USB power settings on laptops sometimes disconnect idle controllers — set the USB root hub to stay powered.

Ray tracing failure signatures

Bedrock ray tracing has narrow requirements — Windows Bedrock, a DXR-capable GPU, and a compatible RTX resource pack. Nearly every “RTX not working” report traces to one of these three signatures.

Symptom: black world after enabling RTX

Usually the RTX resource pack did not activate. Launch a vanilla world without the pack — if that works, the base install is fine. Reapply the pack via world settings and confirm it is at the top of the resource-pack stack.

Symptom: RTX toggle greyed out on a fresh install

Confirm the GPU is on the current supported list on the official Minecraft ray-tracing page and that GPU drivers are current. An older DXR-capable card may have dropped off support with a newer Bedrock build.

Symptom: RTX runs on Windows but not on console

Not a bug. Console, mobile, Chromebook, and Amazon Fire do not offer hardware ray tracing. Only Windows Bedrock exposes the toggle.

Add-Ons: what to disable when a world will not load

Behavior packs and Resource packs load in order. A newly updated pack, an experimental feature that changed defaults, or two packs that touch the same resource can leave a world unable to load. The safe path is to disable one pack at a time.

  1. Export a .mcworld of the affected world where supported before touching packs; preserve a Realm copy for console worlds when that route is available.
  2. Open the world's Edit > Behavior Packs and Resource Packs lists.
  3. Remove the most recently added or most recently updated pack. Load the world in single-player.
  4. If it loads, contact the pack's creator through its Marketplace entry with the platform, game version, and error.
  5. If it still fails, disable all custom packs, load again, and re-enable one at a time.

Reference: Mojang, Marketplace. Third-party sideloaded packs use different rules and are not covered by the same recovery.

Feature failure → first safe check

This table pairs each feature with the failure that most commonly follows a game drop and the first thing to try before uninstalling anything.

Feature Common post-drop failure First safe check
Cross-play Friend shows offline; invite refuses to join Compare Settings > About numbers on both devices; force an update on the older device
Realms Slot vanished, hangs on load, or a pack fails Download the world through Realm settings; check help.minecraft.net for a known issue
Marketplace item Purchased pack missing after a reinstall Sign in with the exact Microsoft account that bought it; open the Marketplace library
Marketplace Pass Item disappeared from the catalog Check the item is still on the current Pass catalog list; buy separately if it rotated out
Split-screen Second profile cannot join Confirm the second profile is signed in and has Xbox privacy allowing multiplayer
Controller / touch Input drops after an OS update Re-pair the controller, clear input cache, apply OS and controller firmware updates
Ray tracing (RTX) Black world or greyed-out toggle Test a vanilla world without the RTX pack; update GPU drivers; check the supported GPU list
Add-On World fails to load after pack update Export .mcworld where supported, or preserve a Realm copy; disable the newest pack; test again
Featured Servers List empty after game drop Check the Xbox status page; retry in a few minutes; do not reinstall

If two rows apply, prioritise the row that touches your saved world before the row that touches the online session.

Backup habits that pre-empt each failure

Most recovery steps depend on a working .mcworld export or a downloaded Realm copy. File export is not generally available on Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch; use Realms as the supported cross-device route when the world and account can use it.

  • One recoverable copy per session. On devices with Export World, take a .mcworld export after a long session. For console worlds, periodically upload to a Realm and download a verified copy on a supported destination.
  • Local copy before every Realm change. Downloads > World before renaming a slot, changing packs, or resetting.
  • Version snapshot before a Marketplace pack. Note the current Bedrock version and pack list in a text file. If a pack breaks the world, you know what changed.
  • Off-device copy. Move exported .mcworld files outside game storage. Consoles do not generally expose those files directly, so verify the Realm-downloaded destination copy rather than assuming USB export exists.
